Watkinsville

Historically, Oconee County has depended on the success of agricultural pursuits which now continue to bolster the areas economy. After diversifying into row cropping, peaches, cattle and swine production, and the profitable poultry industry, the county proudly looks forward to the continued legacy of a growing economy. Further, Oconee County was named for the second time in a row as one of the “Best Places to Live in Rural America,” by Progressive Farmer.

Watkinsville boasts several places of historical significance. The William Daniel House, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is one of the oldest houses in the county and now used for events, educational exhibits and various receptions. Eagle Tavern, across from the County Courthouse is an old inn, tavern and stagecoach stop that has been restored to look like it did in the early 19th century. In rural parts of the area, just south of Watkinsville lays Edler’s Mill covered bridge. Mills were an important gathering place for farmers where news and gossip were exchanged along with their products.

Residents can also find several outlets for recreation. Nearby Heritage Park is approximately 275 acres that features many walking, hiking and biking trails while offering local events such as horse shows, dog shows and rodeos. Watson Mill Bridge State Park is one of the most picturesque state parks in Georgia. More than 1000 acres contains the longest original site covered bridge in the state, spanning nearly 230 feet across the South Fork River. Additionally, the park offers nature, bike, hiking and horseback riding trails with RV sites and picnic shelters.

Watkinsville is more than just agriculture and history. Residents can enjoy many attractions of the area including the Apalachee and Oconee Rivers, Paradise Falls, North High Shoals and Oconee National Forest. Local artisans of pottery, blacksmithing and other fine arts find inspirational environments in Northeastern Georgia. Proximity to the universities broadens the cultural opportunities available to the populace. With the State Botanical Garden, theatre and music centers near the colleges, residents are able to satisfy their craving for performance arts and natural sciences in the same day.

Whether it's the diverse cultural and recreational opportunities, the strong economy or the southern hospitality, Watkinsville affords a quality of life second to none and an increasingly desirable place to live, work and raise a family.
